How do I remove "via ontramail" on the messages I send?

My messages are being sent with "sent by 'mysite' via ontramail.com" in the header and my customers using Gmail see this. Can I change this so it only comes from my site and not "ontramail.com"?

By default ONTRAPORT signs all authentication on emails using the domain “ontramail.com”. This causes some ISPs (Gmail being the most notable) to display the email as being “sent by yoursite.com via ontramail.com”. To prevent this message from being displayed in Gmail you must add the DNS records described to any domain that you are using as an “email from address”.

WARNING: If you are not familiar with making modifications to your DNS settings we strongly recommend hiring a qualified web developer to complete this process as you can permanently lose all content, email service, etc. on that domain if other settings are inadvertently changed.

To do the following process you need:

  • an ONTRAPORT account
  • a privately hosted email FROM address from your domain. It cannot be a free email address such as Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.
  • Access to your domain's DNS records
  • Knowledge of how to add a new DNS record to your domain

You can do this with any ONTRAPORT account level!

  1. Email [email protected] and let our postmasters know what domains you will be adding DKIM records to so they can make the necessary chnages on their end.
  2. Log into the DNS manager of your domain registrar and add the following records:
    1. Record 1: DKIM
  3. Type: TXT
  4. Name (Selector): ontramail._domainkey
  5. Value: "k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQDiHV+GFJUPAtmIh26KHbn5PZXEFm3XK2XjEs4HFOSDZthULWyGvI5CqfYmNm7LFTWC3v5m6CtbLeNgDu0RwTw+94TSryL4ZYC6PESaJCHurmpREZTh+UFlLliRip3reqrNfoYpkiWa6fgu9vbyZob+W3d+leBP/p0mmOXeJiOjKwIDAQAB;"
  6. Record 2: SPF
  7. Type: TXT
  8. Name (selector): Blank or @ (the root domain)
  9. Value: "v=spf1 include:_spf-moon-ray.ontramail.com include:_spf-ontramail.ontramail.com ~all"
  10. Note: If you are sending email from other services using this domain you will need to add the mailing IPs of those other services in your SPF record as well. These can be added as new “ip4:” items in the value. As well, add any other mailing domains that your mail might come from in an “include:example.com” item.

  11. Record 3: DMARC

  12. Type: TXT
  13. Name (selector): Blank or @ (the root domain).
  14. Value: "v=DMARC1; p=none; sp=none;"
  15. Note: If you would like to be notified of emails that fail DMARC, or if someone is forging your mail, you can add “mailto:[email protected];” to the end of this record to have that address notified of failures.

To set this up you MUST be on ONTRAPORT, if you are a SendPepper or an Office Autopilot customer and waiting to be migrated you will not be able to implement this until your account has been migrated. (If you do not know what that means it does not apply to you.)

The change will only be final once you have hosted the necessary DNS records and our postmasters have confirmed that everything is in place and working correctly.

This change will remove the “via ontramail.com” message for [email protected] inboxes. Google apps, Outlook, etc. will still display the "via ontramail.com" message.
